Selling an unlicenced boat?
Posted by Mike from Boat Check WA on 24th Nov 2025
Hey, look......it happens.....
You're not using the tinny and you have let the rego run out.....its taking up space and some extra cash would be handy, so you clear out the leaves, give the motor a run, peel of the rego stickers and put it on marketplace....job done!
But wait....you peeled of the rego stickers because you are selling it unlicenced....correct?
Well no.....in Western Australia, the registration number that is issued to the boat when its registered for the first time actually stays with the boat forever, as long as it's in WA.....in fact, you cant change a boat registration number once its been issued....its permanent!
Removing the registration stickers and throwing away your last boat registration certificate can actually make it harder for the new owner to register the boat in their name.
So our advice is, keep your last registration certificate and leave the rego number on the boat, even if the registration ran out years ago.....it might even make the boat easier to sell!
