We did a pre-purchase inspection on a SeaRay cruiser recently. Older, early 2000’s model boat, but in really nice condition. The Mercruiser 5.7L V8 looked great, the original black epoxy paint still glossy and the engine well was really nice and clean. At first glance, it looked like it had new exhaust risers and manifolds, but when we proceeded to remove the spark plugs to do a comp test, it quickly became apparent that someone had skimped a little bit and fitted new, genuine risers onto the old, leaking manifolds. Luckily we got all the corroded plugs out and the compression was fine, so we left it up to the buyer and seller to decide who was paying for the new manifolds ?

This could have been a very expensive repair in a year or two for the buyer, as when the manifolds finally corrode through, catastrophic engine damage is almost guaranteed when salt water is pulled into the exhaust ports. Both the seller and the buyer had no inkling to the state of the manifolds, so there was no drama at all…..just relief the issue had been found ? Buying a boat?
